Featuring Kelly McDonald
(Kelly Artist on fb)
I new Kelly Artist was very talented, the first time I saw her photographs of fairies and children. I wanted to know more. How does she go about designing? What is her art process? I thought you would enjoy meeting Kelly who has been an artist since childhood.
Thanks for being with us.
*My background is in childcare, and when my first little charge died (snake bite) I saw that his parents had only a handful of snapshots. After that, I used to take pictures of kids I cared for, lots of them. Then after my son was born, I was getting asked to do photos from friends, and started a small business. It was just taking off and I had begun experimenting in photoshop when we moved overseas. No body would let me photograph them over there, not even for free, so I began to pinch friend’s photos, and edit them together. This was hard as each picture was a different quality/setting, and to mix them I learned a great deal. When we got back to Australia 3 years later, I had another baby and had to start earning some dollars. I said to hubby, I just want to try this, and opened my studio and began to edit like this. I wanted to recreate the look of the old swap cards I used to collect as a little girl. Pretty, whimsical and a little old fashioned, but magical. I love to paint and draw, and this is a great way to mix the two (and less messy)
*How do you begin a new design?
I work mostly from my studio now, but I still like to do a manipulation (blending of images) Mostly I have the model image, and make a background to suit. I try to match the lighting and angle as much as possible between the two images
*How much time does your art require?
Studio image, about 2 hours. Manipulation 2-4 hours
*I know you are a writer also. Have you thought about illustrating your picture books with your artworks?
Yes! I have done a few personalized stories, and have 7 book covers published as well. I also made a special book for my grandfather (RD) which I treasure, as does my mum.
*What’s next for you?
I hope to keep writing, creating and bringing a little magic to as many people as I can. Then when I’m too old to crawl around after the kids, lol, I will teach.
